When Feeling Overwhelmed

It’s been almost a month since I started working at my current internship and it’s been very rewarding from the moment it started. Everyday, I find myself learning new things not only about the job, but about myself. However, every now and then, I tend to get very anxious whenever I am assigned a new task and I’m not sure how to even get started. Before, during my first couple of weeks, my immediate reaction was to panic. Luckily, I’ve began to realize that panicking isn’t usually the answer. Now, when I find myself in a situation where I don’t really know what I’m supposed to do, I look at it as something that is positive because it’s an opportunity to learn something new.

Here’s a few tips on how to cope when you are dealing with anxiety from feeling overwhelmed. But what has been specially helpful for me is keeping a positive attitude and realizing that what matters is that you do your best. Having this outlook has made my internship experience much more enjoyable and made me realize that you can always learn new things if you set your mind to it and it’s okay to ask questions when needed. However, take the time to explore something on your own first because chances are you will figure out how to solve the problem yourself. Looking back at a few of the times where I found myself panicking helps me realize that it really wasn’t a reason to get so stressed out, and finding solutions is always a very rewarding process.

You’re right-panicking is never the solution to any problem even though it can be our first reaction. As new interns in the work world, it’s important to remember that we aren’t expected to know everything right off the bat, or to be perfect. Keep putting in your best effort, Lucia!

Love your insight, Lucia! It’s definitely overwhelming being in a new workplace but you’re right, panicking doesn’t help at all. Positivity has helped us both so keep up the great work!
