So Close

That’s all folks. Well not quite, but pretty close. I can’t believe how fast this term went. I can only assume it by so quickly because we were all so busy the whole time. I wasn’t sure how much time I was going to be able put into this internship when we started. I remember be told about 20 hours a week, which didn’t seem like a lot of time to me. I was excited either way, but I was hoping I would be able to work a little more often.

Well, I got what I wished for. I think I ended up putting in about 30 to 35 hours a week. I’m so glad I was able to. I intentionally didn’t work anywhere else this term that way I could truly soak up all my internship had to offer. It paid off.

I think it became apparent to me that I must have done something right after a phone call I got last Wednesday. My supervisor called me up and asked what I had planned in the morning. He wanted me to call a guy who was living in Singapore at eight in the morning our time. He wanted me to interview him, then write up a Q&A and told me it was going to see print.

Just the fact that he called me to see if I could do that for him was a big deal. But what really made me feel good about it was his lack of direction he gave me for the interview. He trusted me enough to simply say, “Interview this guy for me.” I called him and went over my questions, but it was a five-minute conversation. He let me go and had total faith in my ability to get what he wanted. And I think I did.

It’s moments like that when I realize everything we’ve done, all the hard work, has paid off. We’re trusted now in our abilities to do the same exact things that people who are actually getting paid do. We’re one of them! Ha, maybe not quite yet, but we’re all so close.

I’m not exactly sure what to say to conclude this, but I want to wish everybody luck. It’s unlikely many of us will ever talk again, but we shared this time together and I’ll be forever grateful for that. I have no doubt in my mind that you’ll all do great things in life. I’ll catch you guys later.

  1. Congrats on the interview! It sounds like you got a lot out of your internship, and some portfolio work. It’s interesting to think after these internships, it will be expected of us to act as independently as you just did. I’m sure you’re as excited as I am to be paid to carry out those responsibilities. Good luck to you too in these next couple years, I’m sure they will be exciting!

Great job! It sounds like all of your hard work paid off and you got some valuable experience that will be very helpful in your future. It sounds like you are doing some great work over there and that you have a bright road ahead of you. Congrats!

Congratulations on getting to such a confident and comfortable position with company! I think it’s easy to get caught up with resume bullet points, job applications and portfolio items, and we sometimes forget the parts of the experience here that are harder to measure and quantify. To be trusted to conduct that type of interview is a fantastic achievement – I’m sure you feel great about the progress you’ve made this spring.

That is awesome! It’s a great accomplishment, your hard work has paid off. It sounds like you have made the most of this term. Keep up the hard work and stay confidant! It’s true that many of may never be in contact again, but this experience brought us all together. Good luck!

Awesome job! I love getting the chance to prove myself. Getting opportunities to show that you can accomplish things by yourself is really rewarding. I had very little direction throughout my internship, because all of my assignments were given via email. Sometimes it freaked me out, because I was scared I would screw things up. Anyway, congrats! Keep up the good work!

  6. Kudos sir on the interview! So fantastic that all the effort and extra time you invested in your internship paid off. Also what a treat to do an interview with someone in Singapore, that’s not an offer you get everyday. The fact that your boss gave you such freedom on this must speak volumes to the other work you have produced for your internship. I hope this internship will lead to many other wonderful opportunities! Best of luck on your future endeavors

Isn’t responsibility fun? I thoroughly enjoy when a coworker asks me to do something that seems of high importance. You clearly are doing a great job at your internship, and I’m sure it will be hard for them to let you go (so I hope they dont!).
This has been such a great cohort, and I agree, we really are lucky to have such a great experience. Maybe some day we’ll all be professional contacts for eachother! Keep up the great work. 🙂

  8. Way to go Cody! That’s totally exciting! I’m so glad you got to end your internship with such a high-point. I’m looking forward to seeing my own stuff in print in the August issue of the magazine I’ve been working on down here in SF. (We go to press this week.) Just wait until you really get paid to do this stuff! Having seen your skills at work before, I have no doubt we’ll see many a Cody Newton byline in the future. Enjoy your last week. I can’t wait to see everyone at graduation. (Party TWICE as hard when “ya’ll” are done, cause I can’t be there to hold up my end of the bar.) 😉
